What Are Transfusion Blood Products?

Transfusion blood products are components derived from human blood that are used in medical treatments to replace lost blood or treat various medical conditions. These products are critical for patients undergoing surgeries, trauma care, cancer treatments, or managing chronic conditions like anemia or clotting disorders.

Leukoreduced Red Blood Cells (LRBCs)

Red blood cells are the blood in transfusions. They are used to treat anemia, blood loss due to surgery, trauma, and certain types of hemoglobinopathies like sickle cell disease. RBCs transporting oxygen through the body, and transfusions help improve oxygen delivery to tissues, restoring energy and function.

Platelets

Platelets are blood components that help with clotting and prevent excessive bleeding. They are often needed for patients undergoing chemotherapy, bone marrow disorders, or certain types of surgery, such as organ transplants, ophthalmology and neurosurgery. Platelet transfusions help prevent or treat life-threatening bleeding by promoting blood clotting.

Plasma

Plasma is the liquid of the blood that carries nutrients, hormones, proteins, and waste products. It is often transfused to patients with severe burns, liver disease, or clotting disorders such as hemophilia. Plasma vital proteins like albumin, immunoglobulins, and clotting factors, which are used in the treatment of shock, immune deficiencies, and blood clotting disorders.
